About L'Arche Glasgow

The impetus for L'Arche Glasgow came from an ecumenical Easter retreat in the city led by L'Arche's founder Jean Vanier. This inspired several Glasgow people to organise a day-long conference in the city about learning disabilities, from which emerged a core group of active people. Aware of the lack of suitable accommodation for people with learning disabilities in Glasgow, they invited L'Arche to work with them to set-up a Community in the city. They have been researching the level of need for residential support for people with learning disabilities in the area, and raising awareness of L'Arche through local talks and fundraising events.

The secretary of the seed group, The Rev'd Leith Fisher, recently retired minister of the Wellington Church in Glasgow, says, "We are delighted that we have now been recognised as an official L'Arche project. We can now take our plans further by entering into formal dialogue with local authorities and others about funding the future L'Arche Glasgow Community, and work towards the opening of our first house within the next few years."

We should be glad to hear from anyone who would be interested in actively supporting this initiative. Welcoming L'Arche Glasgow, John Peet, General Secretary of L'Arche UK, says, "The commitment and enthusiasm of the Group have played an important part in achieving this progress towards a third Community in Scotland. In a small but tangible way, we hope the project will make a different to the lives of people with learning disabilities and raise awareness of the gifts they can offer us all."
